Question

Variable Time Length Timer

asked on June 1, 2018 Show version history

Hi,

I am working on a process for our IT department which will allow people to request key card access to buildings and will then automate the process with our S2 system.  If the access is temporary, I'd like the person who fills out the form to be able to dictate the length of time they are requesting access for, which will then trigger a timer to remove their access after that period of time.  In the past the only timer option I have used requires a predetermined length of time (I had to choose 30 days, 60 days etc) and was not entered by the user on the actual form.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

It's hard to say as I don't have a complete picture of your entire process but you can  certainly pass on the user input time to Workflow and use either the Delay or the Date Token Calculator activities, which allow you to use variables for calculation.

In Forms, you can also set a timer based on a variable which would probably work for your process. Just set up a field on the form asking the user how long they would need access. You can then set a delay or timer based on that length.

You could also get a little more complex and have the initial submitter request a length of time, and then give an approver the right to approve that length or adjust it.
