Question

Script the change

asked on May 31, 2018

Hi,
In Laserfiche client, we need to select “Retain file extensions in electronic document names”  from Tools\Options \New Documents\General”

This change needs to be made in about 120 client installations.  Is there any way to script this change and push to all clients.

Another option if possible is to change in setting in the Laserfiche Server that does the same as mentioned above.

Thanks

You could set this as a user attribute in the everyone group.

[Options]RetainFileExtensions

Data: Yes

However this would be overwritten if a user unselects this option in their settings.

Hi Naveed,

The attribute will work for default settings, but won't impact users who already have a value for that setting or if people change it, like Anthony indicated. Another approach you could look into is Settings Lockdown, which allows you to preset specific settings and prevent users from changing them. https://www.laserfiche.com/support/webhelp/Laserfiche/10/en-US/administration/#../Subsystems/LFAdmin/Content/settings-lockdown.htm has more information. File Extensions is one of the items under Advanced Import.

Out of curiosity, why do you need to force all users to import documents with the extension added to the file name?

The only time this request came up for me was when a customer wanted to trial the WebDAV functionality whereby they expose Laserfiche as a web folder/drive letter. This requires file extensions in the document name in order to function.

As it turned out WebDAV seemed quite unstable, dropping the connection repeatedly, so it was never pursued further. The idea was to allow users to browse Laserfiche folders when selecting a document to upload to a website (i.e. upload photos, cloud storage, Laserfiche support cases!)
