Laserfiche forms lets you save a new form without the required fields the template requires

asked on May 15, 2018

The title says it all. When I am designing a form, I can save and publish that form without requiring the same fields as the template it is passing data to. If the end user doesn't fill out the whole form, the form will terminate when submitted due to not having the required fields the template requires. The fix to this issue is ensuring that you require the same fields in the form that are in the template. But, wouldn't it be a great feature if Laserfiche forms prompted the designer that they are about to save a form that is not in sync with the template?

It would be, but when you are creating a form you are not specifying the Template to use. The Template is specified in the Save to Repository service task. Since you can have multiple forms within a single Forms process, which could all use different variables, it gives a lot of flexibility as to which variables would populate which fields in the template. If you were to do what you are describing, that flexibility goes away.

Ah, yes that makes sense. So if I have 3 forms using the same business process, the forms themselves are different. Say I have a Home survey, Utility survey, and Salary verification form and they all use the investigation template. The investigation template requires last name, first name, client ID, and date of birth to properly name and file the form when submitted and processed through a workflow. All of the forms have those variables plus other important information not required by the template but is being captured on the form. Would having a warning letting the designer know that they are trying to save and publish a form that does not have the required fields that the template needs still take away that flexibility?

I think the better option would be when setting the Save to Repository service task in the Process Designer, to have it know which fields for the selected template are required and not let you save the Field configuration unless they all have a value.
