LF Authentication Service Host

Can someone explain what function the LFAuthenticationServiceHost.exe *32 Process serves? I can not find any documentation on this in the admin help files. I'm curious as some users have this installed and others do not.

Note that since this is used by web applications (web client and mobile server) it would be unusual for any user to have it installed on their machine in a production environment.
