Question

Migrating 6TB and questions about multiple volumes within a Folder

asked on April 30, 2018

Hello there,

We are starting the migration, Technology Folder/DOT volume to DOTVol and we are looking for a greater understanding of how we should handle folders with multiple volumes.  For example:

Technology folder --> ATC folder (DOT) --> Budget folder (DOT) --> file 1 (FACILVol)

Technology folder --> ATC folder (DOT) --> Budget folder (DOT) --> file 2 (FACILVol)

Technology folder --> ATC folder (DOT) --> Budget folder (DOT) --> file 3 (DOT)

Technology folder --> ATC folder (DOT) --> Budget folder (DOT) --> file 4 (DOT)

Technology folder --> ATC folder (DOT) --> Budget folder (DOT) --> file 5 (DOT)

Migrating at the ATC folder level will migrate files 1- 5 to the new DOTVol.  Do we have to migrate each file within each folder that has multiple Volumes and migrate individually?  Or is there an easier way to do this?

I believe it doesn't really matter which volume the docs are stored at this point...  The data integrity is not compromised and the access is controlled at folder level not volume correct?  Are we missing anything?  this is going to be a grueling process that I will have to do at night and weekends.  Also, has anyone used workflows to migrate files?  If so, is it quicker?

I appreciate your time and assistance :)

Thanks,

Sue

Right, if you want the documents in a folder to go to different volumes then you have to specify the ones to migrate with more granularity than you can do at the folder level.  You don't have to do this just from the folder browser though, you can run searches and migrate from the results listing.

Access control is generally done from folder inheritance, though you can also have security on a volume if necessary.

So I was able to migrate 5K files lastnight EXCEPT for 2 files.  Got the error:  Unknown Entry: Invalid object name

Any idea?  I thought about copying and trying to move the copy and then renaming it after it migrated...  Any ideas?
