Windows Client installed in DMZ

posted on March 9, 2018

Hello all,

Had a customer ask about installing the Windows Client in the DMZ.  Does anyone have experience in doing this?  The DMZ is completely outside the network, so I'm not exactly sure if this is possible without having some security concerns.

I would like to know what needs to happen to make this happen (if possible).  Is it just a matter of port/firewall configuration?

Thanks in advance for any input!

It is mostly just a matter of opening the right ports (80 or 443) for communication.  Repository broadcast likely won't work, so you'll need to enter that information manually.  And Windows authentication won't work since you're not on the domain.

Why do you want a client in the DMZ?  Who will be using it?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for that information!  I figured it was probably just opening the right ports.  Not sure exactly who will be using it or why they would even want to do this...Just got asked the question and we were not sure as none of our clients do this.

Thank you,

Jon
