Question

Using the & Search Symbol to return all or some of the words in Document Text search

asked on January 26, 2018

We have a customer who uses the & Search Symbol in the Word(s) or phrase search dialog box and what he is seeing is the the result only returns documents with all the words from the Multiple word search entry.

Example- Improvements & system & claims only gives him documents that have all the words from the search string in them.

Is there a way to have this search return documents that have one, or two of the words in them?

The & character is a search operator, so searching for those three terms with an & symbol is explicitly searching for all three terms. If the customer is interested in a phrase that contains the & symbol, use double quotation marks around the phrase. Searching for improvements system claims will return results that have one or more of the terms.

You may wish to use text search as shown below:

If you are looking for documents containing specific words but not other words, you may wish to construct a query using advanced search syntax. For more information, see this whitepaper and this Help File.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Karia- The user tried the option of entering the words with just a space and it returned no results (See attachment):

Thanks for the link to the advanced search syntax document. We have been looking at that, which brings up a question I also posted, the user is trying to pass search symbols for not - and or | with the same words and gets no results (see attachments).

Appreciate your help,

Jeff

These screenshots are of a search form, which could have been configured to match any or all constraints (shown below).

Do you get the same results when trying the text search as shown below?

Also, are you able to replicate this when logged into the repository as a full user?

Hey Karina,

They are set for All Constraints.

As for the search result output you showed, the user wants to user a singular custom form for each search.  They don't want to have the user trying to figure out which template to use, by the selecting the drop-down as your image shows.

Is there a way to verify that singular form, using all constraints, can pass the Symbol they need to get the returns they are looking for?

Thanks-Jeff
