Question

Question

Can you attach Laserfiche documents to a discussion thread?

asked on January 17, 2018

I sat in the Discussions session last year at conference. The question was asked, "Could external folks with no Laserfiche license have a Discussions login?". The answer by the presenter was "yes".

If that is the case, my questions is; "Can a Laserfiche or Windows document be attached to a Discussions thread, so thread participants can download or view the document as a PDF?".

Hi Dan!

Yes, you can attach windows documents to ongoing Discussions threads allowing others the ability to view and download them. As for Laserfiche documents, you can only start a discussion thread about a file in the repository. To place a Laserfiche document in an ongoing thread, you will to download the document, then upload it to the discussion thread. If you have WebLink, you could also paste the URL to the discussion thread allowing others the ability to interact with the document through that client.

Brandon,

Thank you! This has been most helpful. Just to confirm, all of these actions (other than starting the thread) are available to unlicensed external folks, who have login credentials configured for them in Discussions, correct?

Regards,

Dan

While it does not require a license to view posts, only named users created in LFDS can participate in a discussion thread.

Hi Brandon,

Is there any information on how unlicensed external folks get login credentials to a discussions site?

Hi Nadine,

Users need licenses to get login credentials. However, you can review the tip on this help file to ensure that unlicensed folks can view discussion posts.

Hi Brandon,

Thank you for getting back to me so quick :o) This is interesting.  So in theory a public facing form with a "FAQ" or say "announcements" area could direct external users to view public facing materials.  I like that idea for something else I am working on.  Would there be such a thing as retreival license for discussions or would you have to be a full user for disscusions?  Would discussions work in the DMZ? Thank you for your help?

Cheers

Hi Nadine,

Well, both full or retrieval Laserfiche users can sign into the discussions site. So either license can be used. And yes, Laserfiche Discussions can work in a DMZ so that employees can participate in discussions even when they are out and about. Hope this helps!

OK - So, just to be very clear, so i do not misdirect a potential client. Let's use a specific use case scenario.

Say I have a prospect who often has e-mail discussions with me regarding a contract or other document.

1) Can I give that person login credentials to a Discussions group/thread (where the person in question has no Laserfiche licensing)?

2) If I understand correctly, that person can view the thread and participate with a response, while in that thread?

3) Can that person post a Windows (or other non-Laserfiche) document to the thread?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi Dan,

Only named users created in LFDS can participate (e.g., post, reply, etc.) in a discussion thread. Everyone else can only view publicly accessible posts.
