Question

MS Office Preview Pane - EML and MSG now supported, what about docx, xml, and pptx?

asked on January 2, 2018

So I was reviewing the 10.3 updates list and noticed this tidbit:

Email Preview Pane

The folder browser preview pane can now display both MSG and EML email messages.

From my understanding, however, to view MSOffice documents we require Office Web Apps Server which requires minimum MSOffice 2013. Unfortunately for us, we use Office 2010, so we can't preview any MSOffice documents in LF unless we generate pages (which unreasonably quadruples our storage requirements).

My question now is whether there is a minimum MSOffice requirement for this new feature in 10.3 and if not whether other MSOffice doc types will be supported in the future. I know competitors have MSOffice preview panes built-in the system, unlike Laserfiche. I have multiple users frustrated and it would be great to see this!

The EML and MSG preview functionality does not require any particular version of Office.  It's using code that we ship, as contrasted with the docx preview that operates as an integration.  We are looking at offering another preview option for users without the Office Web Server, but this would be late this year at the earliest.

Heck, if it's on the roadmap: I'm happy! Late this year is better (or even next year) is better than never!

Thanks, Brian.
