Question

Documents, Folders, and Shortcuts can't have the same name in the same location

asked on December 13, 2017

I've discovered the hard way after a conversion script crashed that you can't have a folder and a document (and/or shortcut) with the same name in the same location. I knew that each entry type can't have the same name as other entries of the same type in the same location, but I didn't realize it also applied to the other entry types.

I can understand why this would be the case, but since we have entry type to differentiate between the files, would be possible / feasible for Laserfiche to be able to allow having, for example, a document and a folder with the same name in the same location? Windows is only able to do this if the document has a file extension. If not, we get a name conflict issue.

An entry's name has to be unique in a folder, and an entry's full path (path + name) needs to uniquely identify it.  If we wanted to allow this change, we would have had to make that decision a long time ago.

This is not at all how the Windows file system works, which would be the expectation of the user.

You said:

But if you included the extension (path + name + extension) in the full path, then folders and files at the same path would still be unique.

Yes, Windows considers the extension to be part of the name. Sometimes, anyway - it also hides it in Explorer by default. In Laserfiche it is a property separate from the name, and so doesn't enter in to uniqueness calculations.
