Question

Workflow's email notifications - subject line, how many spaces?

asked on October 23, 2017

Has anyone set up Workflow to send email notifications where there were too many characters that ended up in the subject line?

I just had a request to have something added to the subject line that could end up 100 characters or more due to the fact that the token is from a multi-value collection field from the initiating LF Form submission.  Will that cause a problem?

This clip (see below) shows the Subject of the email when there was only two values in the token (the last part of the subject line).  There is the odd time when the applicants sometimes put 4-8 values in the legal address collection field.

Workflow will allow up to 256 ASCII characters. If the subject contains non-ASCII characters, the limit is 60 characters. The Workflow server will trim characters past those limits when sending the message.

Oh, good, so the Workflow server will just cut out any characters past the limit.  That is what I was hoping to hear.  That means the one odd-ball one where there are too many characters isn't going to make the whole process hang-up or terminate.  Great!

Update, I'm finding that, with the way I have it set up now, the email notifications are only bringing in the first instance of each of the multi-value metadata fields, so there is no worry about too many characters in the Subject line!

We run into an issue with French non-ASCII characters.  Any way that this can be increased?

I've included an example below:

Unfortunately, no. It's a .Net limitation.

Hi Miruna,

Can Laserfiche work on finding a "Workflow programming mechanism" what will allow sending normal French accent messages out by emails, longer than 60 characters?

I've always tried limiting the subject line length (thinking that there was a fixed limitation to 60 characters), but did not know that if no accent characters present, the limitation is 256 characters.

Its always a challenge finding a way to cut subject line length.

Hope Laserfiche developers can find a way. Can this be added to your Feature Request list?

Regards,

Daniel

Hi Miruna,

A customer of ours who is currently on Laserfiche 12 has reported this issue. Does this limitation still apply to Laserfiche Workflow Version 12-compatible .Net version(s)?

Thank you!

Rob

Yes, this limitation still exists in .Net Framework 4.8.
