Question

Move a Volume

asked on October 23, 2017

I'm suddenly having a serious drive space issue on my Laserfiche Server.  I need to move a volume from one drive to another very soon.  I've read a number of posts but can't seem to find a definitive answer as to the best way to accomplish this.  I'd like to move my volume from D:\LFData\VolumeName to E:\LFData\VolumeName.  Can't I just somehow take the volume offline, move the folder, and repoint the path to the volume?

I don't want to use the "migrate" option from within the Laserfiche client because the last couple of times I used that function it left me with a mess of thousands of orphaned files.  When migrating the new files show up in the new location, but never get removed from the original location.

Hello,

I've encountered issues with LF not cleaning up when volumes are migrated or deleted and it seems that it may be a bug that will be addressed in a future release.

You can manually alter the volume path in the Admin console by going to "Volumes" right-clicking the target volume, and editing the Path attribute (We've done this before without actually taking it offline).

Once you click "Apply" it will update the volume path in the repository database, but if you have rollover configured this has to be done for the individual volumes you are moving as well as the parent volume.

If you only change the root volume it will only cause it to use the new location when the next rollover occurs and it will not affect the existing volumes.

I would recommend copying the entire volume folder to the new location first, updating the volume path, and confirming that everything is working as expected before removing the old files to reduce the risk of documents being unavailable.

I've recently spoke with my VAR and they mentioned that there have been sporadic reports from various clients and Laserfiche Answers posts about users having "varying levels of success" with the migrate function.  I really need to do some substantial volume clean up, but I cannot proceed if I don't have confidence in the migrate process.  Can I please get some response from Laserfiche if this is a known issue and if plans to investigate and patch are in the works?  Thanks.

Can someone from Laserfiche please comment if there are known issues with the migrate function and if there are any plans to release a patch or upgrade?
