Custom Tables within Laserfiche

posted on October 12, 2017

Hi All,

I have custom external SQL tables I use for dynamic fields (DocTypes / Sub DocTypes) within templates. I also use a external SQL table for Workflows (folder paths for record series). It's kind of a pain as our IT dept won't let me update these tables myself.

Has there been any thought about allowing a custom table to be created & administered within LF to integrate with templates, workflows and quick fields sessions?

Thanks!

Laserfiche workflow has a full set of SQL activities that can be used to have a workflow do anything that an experienced user with SSMS can do. I've personally modified several procedures in use by our customers where people were directly editing tables, and instead created or modified workflows so Laserfiche takes care of it for them automatically.

Thanks so much for the feedback Glen. I use SQL tables in a couple of instances. The first is for Dynamic Fields within a template. I followed the LF help text to the letter & works great:

https://www.laserfiche.com/support/webhelp/Laserfiche/10/en-us/administration/Default.htm#../Subsystems/LFAdmin/Content/Dynamic_Fields.htm

However this is external to LF & our security protocols within our IT dept doesn't allow me to change rows directly. I think I might be able to add rows with those commands you indicated but I'll have to test that.

The second instance I use an external tables is, what you mentioned before where I query the table in my workflow to determine where to file documents within the repository (the folder path). This is so (like you said) I don't have to modify my workflow when documents change. I just have to beg my IT dept to update the table for me.

Which leads to my frustration ... the help text above specifically indicates to create an SQL table outside of LF which in my current environment I'm not allowed to administer directly.

So my question remains if LF has ever considered added tools to forms or workflow to allow custom tables to be built within LF? I can see the advantage of that since you would be able to use the same storage, backup and security as the rest of the LF db. Something to think about ...
