Question

PDF page counts

asked on September 29, 2017

For PDF files in the repository, some PDF files show the number of pages, and some do not. I've noticed that PDFs that have the page count seem to be digital documents, ie, they were created in word and then saved as PDF. For documents that were scanned to PDF (like at a copier) the page count doesn't show. Is there a reason for the discrepancy and if so, any way to resolve it so that all PDFs show the page count? Thanks!

The page count for PDFs reflect the number of associated image or text pages, i.e. if the PDF had pages generated or if it had text generated by an ifilter, etc.

So if it is a scanned image we'd need to generate pages for the page count to work?

I'm not clear on what you're asking. Can you provide the full context of the scenario you're facing? Laserfiche doesn't scan documents as PDFs, so are you referring to documents that were scanned as PDFs (outside of Laserfiche) and then bringing those documents into the repository, but wanting to also have pages associated?

Yes, I think that's what he is asking. Most scanners scan documents in PDF format by default, and in some scenarios those are brought in directly into LF, either manually or via Import Agent. So running "generate pages" on those PDFs would make the page counts show up.

Hi Alex,

Yes Ege is correct, I was asking about documents scanned outside of Laserfiche as PDFs, then imported into Laserfiche.

The use case in this scenario is a Laserfiche customer sending documents as PDFs to an external user to print and sign. The user then scans the documents and sends them back. When those documents are then imported into Laserfiche, we want to check the page counts against the original documents to ensure all pages were received.

The page count column wouldn't display the number of pages in the actual PDF itself. It only shows the number of associated image or text pages with the electronic document.

If you generate image pages from PDFs during import, then you will have a corresponding TIFF image page with each PDF page and you can tell that way.

I would recommend just generated text, rather than generating pages. This will get you your OCR'd text and page number while not greatly increasing your storage requirements.

Search your repository for documents with 0 pages and an electronic format pdf. Generate text - and you're golden.

Ensure your generate text options for pdfs are the following:
