encrypted volumes locking themselves on their own

We have noticed on a client's encrypted student records volumes that they are locking themselves on their own. Any idea on why this is happening? 

I am not really familiar with encryption on volumes... Any one have any idea?

Encrypted volumes need to be unlocked after the LF server service is restarted.

This is why we don't recommend encrypting active volumes.  If you want to encrypt data at rest, doing so at the file system level requires less management.

They did recently have their LF Server Services restarted. Thanks Robert and Brian!
