Custom Column View by template

My client would like to customize the column views based on the template selected. Essentially, whenever a user browses to a document, all the fields in that template are shown in the column view.

Is there already a way to do this? If not, could we add this as a feature request?

Unfortunately, I don't see how this would be possible. The column views are based on the folder setting (user profile), not the fields/templates of its contents (server/database).

The real "show stopper" is that you could have documents with two different templates in the same folder, at which point there would be a conflict.

You can set folder-specific column views, which would get you close, but that will have an impact on performance, especially if you're jumping between folders a lot.

However, I would suggest creating Column Profiles and applying them to the Everyone group. It will not switch between them automatically, but you can make changing between different views as easy as "right-click column header, mouse down to load columns, click profile"

We are going with the column profile as you suggested.

I can see impossibility of how columns could be set by document template. How about basing the columns profile based on the template assigned to the parent folder? That could makes things a bit easier.

Hi Jason I came across this because I was curious to set default column views in all windows clients installed. I noticed with Web Access I can assign everyone to see and views I have made, but the windows client doesn't have this feature.

Do you know if this can still be applied in the Windows Client and pushed for all others to see within that same repository?

The columns, included saved column profiles, are handled with user attributes, so it actually doesn't depend on the local install.

If log into the client with a default account
Configure everything as needed
Go into the Administration Console
Open that account's Properties and select the Attributes tab
Check "Show system attributes"
Highlight everything listed
Click Export to export the configuration an an XML file

Next,

Open the Properties for the "Everyone" group
Select the Attributes tab and click Import
Import the settings you exported from your "template" account

Once you do this, it will set the defaults for every user the first time they log into the repository; however, this won't affect users who are already in the repository unless you wipe their attributes.

Note that some client configuration, like the toolbar, is handled locally so the only way to push that configuration out is using the SDK and Client Automation Tools.
