Laserfiche have been planning to allow customers to add custom panels in Web Access. That could include a universal viewer. 

I would like the same ability in the fat client too. 

Is that useful? 

Another option would be the automated generation of pages every time an electronic document is edited or imported (as you've requested). Even just the first two pages, would be very helpful. 

Although, I tend not to require preview so much, for images and electronic, after metadata has been applied.
