Question

Only seeing "System" in drop-down for Data Source Type

asked on August 2, 2017

Hi all,

We just created a new 64 bit server and migrated everything over. I'm trying to set up a connection to SQL Server but am having some issues. I'm opening Workflow Data Source Administrator > Configure > Wizard type = Windows ODBC. At this step in the Configure Data Source Wizard I'm presented with:

I expect to see ODBC as an option but do not. If I continue with this, I only see system tables/views from SQL Server... So I'm selecting "Administer Data Source Providers" > System DSN > Configure. I'm connecting to the correct Server and the just accept the defaults for everything else. Test Data Source and it works, but again it only brings in the system data, not the views etc. I've created. Have I missed something on the install/migration etc. of the new server? I feel like there should be more Data Source Options..

Thanks!

This dialog appears after you selected to use Windows ODBC. Normally in Windows you have 2 options: user DSN and system DSN. User DSNs are from the perspective of the service user, not from the perspective of the user currently logged into the Designer machine. They're not shown to eliminate confusion (and because there's no real functionality loss). So the dialog is correct.

As far as seeing views, you'll have to look at the data source configuration. If it's set to Windows authentication, you should check the rights for the Workflow Server's service user (because Workflow connects as the service user, not the currently logged in user).

Miruna,

Thanks for the reply. I tried created a User DSN, but had the same drop-down option of only system. I've tried to connect using Windows Authentication and Server Authentication. Both result in the same output. How/where do I check the rights of the Workflow Server's service user? I'm currently looking at the Administration Console > Security > Permissions and Rights, but I'm not sure if this is correct. I don't see a workflow server's service user option.

Thanks
