Client applications do not directly connect to SQL or volumes, all access is mediated through the Laserfiche server.  Those components (server, SQL, volumes) should all be installed in the same location.  What you can experiment with is having Web Access installed at the remote site vs a central location.  You might find that having it installed closer to the users provides a better experience, though it depends on network characteristics and usage patterns.
