Question

Is there a way to convert repository named users to directory accounts?

asked on July 20, 2017

We have a system with 75 repository named users. We want to "migrate" these accounts to LFDS so that they can be managed there instead of inside the repository. The goal is to be able to leverage some of the advanced features of LFDS such as single sign-on.

The only issue is that we want to make sure the users' attributes, group memberships and repository security settings are retained. We don't want to reconfigure everything or manually copy/paste stuff between accounts.

Is there a way to do that?

I see, that's unfortunate. The lack of a migration for repository user accounts throws a wrench into our upgrade plans. Even beyond user attributes and security settings, those repository users have Forms user tasks they are currently working on, and if I'm reading your linked page correctly, it sounds like once we switch Forms to use Directory Server authentication, those user tasks will basically become orphaned since their associated user accounts will no longer be valid. And there is no way to tell Forms to get the user accounts both from an LF repository and the Directory Server - it has to be one or the other (which basically means if you purchase Employee Participant licenses for an existing Rio system, you are forced into this change if you want to be able to use them).

I can't imagine we are the only folks who have run into this scenario. Back when LF was first deployed, Directory Service had not been released yet, so their configuration is heavily invested in repository named users. Are there plans to offer a smoother migration method?

I want to bump this, and also supplement it with a new question: we are upgrading a bunch of Forms Participant users to Employee Participants. The question is, what will happen to the user tasks and drafts that are currently assigned to those Forms Participant accounts?

Manually reassigning them is not an option because there are hundreds of them.

I'm basically looking for a way to make the license upgrade process fully transparent to the users, and have them keep their account name and settings.

There is no migration utility for repository users at this time. Forms offers a migration for participants when converting from repository authentication to Directory Server authentication.

Hi Miruna, it's been about 7 months since your last post, is there any talks about a migration utility that will make it less painful for LF admins or customers?

Follow up question: what does the process look like for the forms user migration?

When you switch to Directory Server authentication, does Forms ask you if you want to move the users from Forms to Directory Server? What happens to the Forms authenticated participant licenses that have been allocated to that Forms instance? Do they automatically get freed up?

Can those users then be made Employee Participants?
