Advice on moving SQL database to azure cloud system.

asked on July 17, 2017

A client of ours is looking to move their SQL database over to azure cloud for more reliability. A question that came from that though is whether they need to spin up a new VM for SQL server or if they are able to just transfer the SQL database to the azure SQL instance in the dashboard. I know it can be done by spinning up a VM without an issue but we aren't sure if they are able to migrate it to the azure SQL database manager in the dashboard and still be able to connect to laserfiche. Has anyone had any experience with this that would be able to give me some advice?

Hi Brandon,

Unfortunately I cannot speak to the specifics of implementing a Laserfiche system on Azure, but is it an option for you to back up everything and try to migrate the back up via the Azure dashboard?

Hi Rob,

We were wondering if we would be able to do that or if we would still need to spin up a VM for the SQL server also.

I gotcha. I guess I'm wondering if you can just give it a try (sans VM) and see what happens, but I understand that might not be possible/safe. Just curious!

Hi Rob,

I am curious how you ended up going about the migration of Laserfiche databases to Azure SQL. Any shortcuts or valuable resources you can share will be helpful.

Thanks

Hi John,

Unfortunately my suggestions were pure theory and I haven't had the opportunity/need to carry this out on my own. As far as my (limited) experience with Azure goes, I am under the impression that this is mostly a question of resource segregation:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/sql-database-paas-vs-sql-server-iaas

On the other hand, Microsoft says that SQL managed instances are best for most migrations to the cloud.

Best,

Rob
