Question

Drag and drop PDF results in numbers changing

asked on July 6, 2017

We just had an instance where a user was using the drag and drop function for importing a PDF into LaserFiche and it automatically changes it to a Tiff. When they did this, however, part of the PDF invoice that they dragged over changed the invoice number from actually numbers to just an "R". They then used the LaserFiche snapshot and re-did it and it was correct. They did not screenshot the error or anything so I have nothing to reference on here.

Does anyone know what was cause this and is there a way to prevent it in the future?

It is possible that the invoice number is a PDF annotation instead of a flat part of the image. I've had issues where converting TIFF on documents with PDF annotations caused issues like that where Import Agent or manual imports caused problems, but Snapshot conversions would work correctly.

I would check the PDF to see if the invoice number is part of the image or an annotation layer, and also check the import settings to see what they have selected for "Preserve PDF Annotations on Laserfiche pages" under Options > New Documents > Settings > When importing PDFs:

Tried that and there were nothing on the PDF that was an annotation. I was able to attempt this again though. It pops up and "R" with a few tiny square boxes to the right and left of the "R" fully covering the area where it originally said "Invoice ####"

Is the PDF protected or anything like that? Do you have a screenshot of what that section looks like after the conversion issue?

I attached a screenshot the shows the original invoice on the top, and what it looks like after on the bottom.

The PDF does not appear to be protected, but I'm not 100% sure how to check that.

There has to be something more to the PDF layers. I can't imagine how page generation could cause such an extreme difference otherwise.

What do you see when you right-click that part of the PDF? Also, are the results exactly the same with "Preserve PDF Annotations" on and off?

I get the same options when I right click on that part of the PDF as I would when right clicking on any other. This PDF is 2 pages and the error happens on both pages where it references the invoice. I also get the same results whether "Preserve PDF Annotations" is on or off.

That's very odd. Which version of the client are you using?

Version 10.1. We're working on getting upgraded to 10.2

If you're running the original release of 10.1, you might want to test it with 10.1 Update 1 installed, which included several fixes for PDF page generation. The update and release notes can be found here.

When using the desktop client, the client does the work, so you should only need to update the client on a test PC without making any changes to the Laserfiche server to see if it helps with the issue you're having.
