I know that a workflow could be built so that if an action is taken in a folder or on a document, a user gets an email, but this doesn't allow for much flexibility for the user to manage their own subscriptions. Perhaps having a built-in tool where a user can subscribe/unsubscribe to folders/records would be useful.
