Question

Users are getting different Search times for same search criteria?

asked on May 23, 2017

Hi All,

Wanted to run this past the community. We have a system installed on a Terminal Server where users access their LF client on that server. What we have been experiencing is that some user searches are taking too long for some users whereas other users that run the same search are getting results back very quickly?

When the user that has a search not returning a search is taking too long cancels the search being run, LF client then locks and is unable to be used for a few minutes.

As the same searches are being conducted by the same users, is there a reason each Client behaves differently?

Thank you

Ziad

Do the users have the same security access in the repository?  One thing that can slow down search results is that the Laserfiche server has to run the search and then figure out which results the user is allowed to see.  Complex or inefficient security policies can slow this down.

If they are the same, I would look to it being different amounts of load on the Laserfiche server at the time.  Is it a dedicated machine?  Have you looked at performance counters at all?

Hi Brian,

The user in question has full administrator rights based on a group created. The server is not a dedicated machine as it used for other applications for the client. I am yet to look at performance counters. Which ones do you think would be best for this?

Thank you

CPU utilization and memory usage would be good to start with.  And you would want to include the other machines that are involved in search: the SQL Server and LFFTS (if that's on a separate machine).

Hi Brian,

Everything is on 1 Machine at the moment. I did the CPU utilization and memory usage and seems to be all good there as well.

It is intermittent though, at times the searches are quick, and at times the same searches tend to just hang.

Hey Brian,

Any other ideas. The users are advising also, when they try stop a search, it is now locking the Client for a few minutes before being able to do another search or anything within the LF Client?

Thanks

Ziad

Have any of the long running searches finished?  Wondering if they are getting the same results.  One issue I had when we upgrade to 10 was that the fuzzy search got turned on (if it was off) and it got defaulted down to 25%.  I had customers doing a search for a very specific document number where they should have gotten back one result and they would get back 50-60 results.

Hi Jennifer,

Not sure if the Fuzzy search is switched on? I do not recall setting it when doing a search or any of the users doing a search requiring a fuzzy search.

Thanks for this, i will check though,

Hi Jennifer,

I believe that is switched OFF. it is very odd behaviour where myself and the user in this example are both part of the administrators group. But, his search times differ from mine even though we are both connecting to the same server / client.

Is indexing turned on?  I know we ran into a problem where it was trying to re-index every day in the middle of the day and it was slowing things way down.

Hi Jennifer,

Indexing options are set to Auto-Index as seen below:

Hi,

Many search cancellations may increase server loads.
What is your query? This may be helpful when identifying which part of search may cause the issue.
Also, we need more info for this issue. The best way to get the information to us is opening a support case.
