Question

Web Access - Unable to print a PDF filled by a Workflow

asked on May 16, 2017

Web Access 10.2.0.150

Workflow Designer 10.2.0.202

I have a blank fillable PDF in the repository, it was imported as a PDF only and has no image file.  Via a workflow I do the following:

Create Entry

Attach Electronic Document (the blank fillable PDF)

Fill Out PDF Form

If I access the filled in PDF via Web Access, the print option is grayed out.  If I access the blank fillable PDF via Web Access, I have the option to print.  In the Fill Out PDF Form activity, I have tried both Merging and Not Merging the content into the image with no change.  If, while in Web Access, I Generate Pages for the filled in PDF, I am then able to print.

I am able to print the filled in PDF via the Desktop Client (10.2.0.839) without issue and without needing to Generate Pages.

Attached is the Blank PDF (Client PO.pdf) and the filled out PDF (4444 - Test Compay - 5_16_2017.pdf).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Michael,

I apologize for the late response. Does the blank PDF have text generated? My guess is that Web Client is detecting the presence of text pages and printing those. If the filled PDF has no text or image pages, there will be nothing to print, so print will be disabled.

It sounds like the root of the problem, however, is that there's no option to print the original PDF. I talked to our developers, and we're going to work on adding this functionality to a future release. For your reference, this is covered under item # 29379 .

Hi Michael,

Thanks for contacting us. I tried importing the attached PDFs. In our internal system, I found that print was disabled for filled and unfilled PDFs. Just to check- you're positive the unfilled PDF didn't have pages generated for it?

In terms of the Web Client's currently supported behavior, we'd expect Web Client to print only Tiff images to the browser. For electronic files without pages, the supported method is to download the file locally and print it in the native application. That being said, we can look into ways to support printing PDFs in the browser in an upcoming version if there's significant demand (other electronic files would be trickier and probably aren't feasible in the near future).

Thanks for the info Ryan.  I am certain there are no pages generated for either, and have had others verify.  As steps, here I what I did to ensure it:

If I am in the Desktop Client, I can Rt Click on the Client PO.pdf (blank & fillable) and choose Open Pages.  The client displays the Electronic File, and if I click to open the Image pane, the page contains no image.  I followed the same steps in the Desktop Client for the filled PDF and it also has no tiff image.

I did now notice that if I choose to Print in the Web Client for the blank PDF, it initiates a download, and doesn't proceed directly to printing.  For now this will suffice, but I wonder why the filled PDF has Print grayed out, and the blank one does not?  It would be interesting to add in support for printing a PDF in the browser, since that's normally how a PDF behaves in a browser.

Having exactly the same issue. We need the ability to print the original PDF. Hopefully it comes sooner than later.

Any updates on this? Right now I have users printing via the pdf screen, which will work for now.
