Default value of a field different on one template than another?

Was this not a feature of one of the latest upgrades (Vs 10+)? I now have a need to to assign a Retention field choice depending on which template is used and I would like to set the default on each template as a different choice. Currently, if I set a default on one template, that choice becomes that default on all the templates that use that field.

I think you might be confusing the ability to set different "required" options for fields across different templates, which was introduced fairly recently. I don't think it's possible to set different default values for a field across different templates.

Consequently, we have several very similarly structured fields, each used for a different template.
