Question

Page count in electronic document not matching physical document pages

asked on April 10, 2017 Show version history

Why does the page count for my Word Documents NOT match the actual physical page count?  These are versioned documents.  Behavior is the same in the Desktop and Web Clients.

Example is Invoice Reporting File document showing as 34 pages in Laserfiche when it is a 14 page document in Word.

Hi Michelle,

The page count column is the number of pages when translated into Laserfiche image or text pages. When you generate text or pages from the original word document, it doesn't always generate the same number of pages. For example, if text is generated through iFilters, that has no information on page breaks so has to guess at when to create each page. If you open up the document in pages the column should match what's shown in the document viewer.

Justin,  I wasn't sure since there were so many pages if this was the case.  Thank you for clarifying.  Would the number of text pages be so much higher because this is a versioned document?

No, the difference in page count is not caused by document version control. The page count shown is for the latest version of the document only.

The page count refers to the number of Laserfiche pages only. If an electronic document was imported without any of the Laserfiche page generation options, then Laserfiche would show the page count as zero. Meanwhile, the folder browser lets you choose columns that will display information specific to electronic documents. (This is automatic on Web Client; some configuration of column view settings is needed in Windows Client.)

If you would like the page count to match with the Word document exactly as shown in the Microsoft Office application, you can use Laserfiche Snapshot to "Print" the Word document into Laserfiche Pages. From these pages, you can use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to extract text from the images. However, OCR is not an error-free technology; there may be some imperfections (typos) in the recognition result.

Ryan,  knowing the additional options for handling of the document is helpful.  In this case, the preference is to keep the Word doc vs. creating a tiff from Snapshotting it into Laserfiche or importing without generating Laserfiche pages. Thanks.
