QF 10.1: Quirky behavior with Auto Rotate

asked on April 3, 2017 Show version history

We are having some odd things happening with auto rotate after upgrading to QF 10.1.  There are three users who log into a scan station.

All are local admins. One is also the Domain Admin.  When we went to 10.1, auto-rotate appears to have stopped working.  However, auto rotate does work when we add an OCR task - if we scan a page sideways, it will rotate and OCR the page correctly, but will not save the page in the correct (rotated) orientation. This is true even when we create a new session and use the auto-rotate task.

But not for everyone - just for the first two (non-Domain admin) users. For the Domain admin auto-rotate worked fine.  Up to the moment when we reinstalled the program.  At that point, auto-rotate stopped working for all users.

There are no errors, and nothing is recorded in Event Viewer.

And regular rotation works fine, when you specify a specific rotation level (i.e. 90/180/270 degrees)

Is anyone else having issues like this?

A hotfix for this issue (bug #26436) is now available for Quick Fields 10.1. See KB 1013873.

Hi Brianna,

I reported this issue to Bill, and I have it up on my screen. What he's referring to is a Rotate process in the Pre-Classification Processing section.  When it works, this process orients the page correctly for further processes such as bar code recognition. We've been using this for several years.

The OmniPage OCR is only mentioned for comparison, because other Answers threads have indicated that the Rotate process uses OCR functionality (behind the scenes) to identify the correct rotation angle.

We have three QuickFields licenses and have seen this happen on all three workstations.  Behavior can vary by user. Re-installing the program can break the rotation when it had been working for a specific user. Backing off to QuickFields 9 restores automatic rotation.

Hi Bruce and Bill,

Thanks for reporting this issue - we were able to reproduce it on our end. We will investigate the problem and update this post when we have more information.

Hi all,

I have pretty much the same problem.

I'm using Quickfields 10.1.0.168.

I have 1 PDF 2 pages in landscape mode. Using the tool rotate, only the second page is rotated.

Do you have a solution?

It sounds like you might be confusing two options in Quickfields:

  1. The Rotate image enhancement to permanently rotate the pages, which has an autorotation option that attempts to guess the correct orientation
  2. The OCR process autorotate option, which is temporary and only used to assist in correctly OCRing pages

I'm not sure why your behavior would change upon upgrade, so perhaps I'm simply misreading your post.
