Can a customer have one repository that is split and stored over multiple hard drives? They have a repository that is over a 1tb

Yes, you can spread the documents over multiple Laserfiche volumes, each on a different disk. Check out this help page for more information on configuring Laserfiche volumes.

Like Robert mentioned you can do volumes, however I am not sure if the repository will automatically pick it up, unless the default volume/drive gets full.  I like to know what happens when a new volume gets added and when does the repository actually starts utilizing it ?

When either a user adds new documents to it or, if the volume is applied as the default volume to a folder, when new documents are created in that folder.

Additionally, if you review the link that Robert posted, you will also notice there's a section for "Rollover Volumes", where you can configure Laserfiche to automatically split your volumes by either size or time. This can help you better manage large volumes, but it all depends on the usage and needs of the customer. I recommend reading the Best Practices section to help you get a better idea on what option you should choose.
