Question

Is the end-user presented with error message whereby technical details are disclosed to him?

asked on March 3, 2017

Hi all,

I want to know in case of all errors encountered in the application, the end-user should be directed to an appropriate error message/page that does not disclose technical details like software version details or database records information.

Is there any situation whereby the end-user is presented with technical details of the error?

Thanks

That depends on the error message and software being used. In the client, some errors will be displayed to the end user and allow them to click on a button to see the details of the error message.

Any user can see the details of the version if they are in the web client or windows client by going to Help-> About.

You seem to be mixing multiple situations in your question.

In the case of security errors, the user is presented with an "Access Denied"-type error. No database records are disclosed.

In the case of an error during their usual tasks, the user would already know what the document name and such were since they're working on it. So no additional information is disclosed even when they look at the technical details to provide to Tech Support.

Web applications, like Forms and WebLink, dealing with unauthenticated users present more generic error messages and log the details to the server's event log where only administrators have access. Websites can be set up to not disclosed web server information. This is an IIS setting, not a Laserfiche one.

Software version is provided in the About box in all applications to make it easier to troubleshoot. This is standard for software, not a Laserfiche-specific feature.
