Question

drag and drop with email attachment separated

asked on February 28, 2017 Show version history

I would like staff to be able to drag and drop emails into Laserfiche and have laserfiche separate the attachment and link the documents.  I know this option is available in the Outlook ribbon and the default is set to separate/link attachments - but this doesn't happen with dragging and dropping emails.

Is this something that will be a feature in the future?

Hi Robyn,

You can indeed choose the separate attachments in the 'Email' tab of the import dialog after drag/dropping an email in the web client. Note that you need to have the import dialog display to see this, so make sure you have 'Always show import dialog' checked in the 'New Document' section of user options.

It is available in the client using drag and drop. Log into the Laserfiche Client and then go to Tools->Options-> New Documents-> Outlook. There you will see the default behavior for Attachments and File Associations.

Thank you for your response. My settings are already set to this, but my email attachments still stay within the email when I drag and drop...

as an additional question, however, how do you manage to get those email properties as a field? I need to set up something similar for our system but have yet to do so as i'm not sure how to pull that data from the email's original metadata.

Thanks!

Following up on this, I set up the email profile for imported emails, and it turns out that I have to use the outlook ribbon to have the metadata (e.g., Recipient, CCs, etc.) carry over.

Moving forward, would it be possible for email metadata to be applied in a template by dragging and dropping?

Email metadata will be added to fields when you drag/drop if the template you've configured is specified as the default template for imported emails, which is a checkbox shown in Blakes screenshot. Do you have that enabled?

Yes, I do have that enabled, but after testing again, I see that it works in the web client but not the hard client. This is expected behaviour?

Hi Robyn, it's working for me in the base case for the desktop client as well as web. Are you configuring the email properties for the current user in the client directly or in the admin console as defaults for the entire organization? It's not clear to me why it wouldn't be working in your tests.

I'm not sure either. The template doesn't get autoassigned at all:

but like I said, it works perfectly in the web client.

This is my personal user settings that I'm changing

I can see where this is changed in the desktop, but how do i assign it in the web client (our staff will only have the web version of Laserfiche)

As an addition to this, is there a way to set the default for all users for emails and attachments to be filed separately but linked?

Is it possible to Drag and Drop e-mails into Web Client 10.2?

Yes it is! The issue is that the option to separate any attachments isn't available through dragging/dropping.

It's working in the web client (and oops, I just realized the original post was for the web client! My apologies!); however, when I drag and drop into the hard client, the attachments tab does not show up (I was sure to drag/drop an email that had attachments to ensure this wasn't a dynamic option):

Hi Robyn,

Are these .msg files with non-embedded attachments? It works for me in the desktop client:

You're right that the attachment tab won't display without attachments, but the distribution list tab should display regardless on .msg email files.

That's right, the attachments are non-embedded. It has never worked for me. I'm using version 10.1 update 2.

The attachments tab should be shown if there are any attachments and it is a valid MSG file. Please open a support case so we can get a sample message and trace logs needed to troubleshoot the issue.

I am using 10.4 and followed the configuration steps above (Blake Smith / VAR  10587  12 • replied on February 28, 2017 ) but still don't see how to separate out the attachments. Furthermore, I can't see the attachments in the Laserfiche view. I have tried this with the desktop client, the web client, and through Outlook, but I just can't see how to separate out the attachments.

I did see an option upon import to separate attachments, but it didn't work and saved everything together (there was an image in the signature of the email, and Laserfiche tried to save that separately) without separating the attached emails.

My primary concern is that I need to redact a section of one of the attachments. I only noticed the unredacted version was still attached to the original email when I was reviewing prior to release to the requester. Otherwise I didn't have any indication that the attachment was there at all.

What am I doing wrong?

anyone have a way to set 'File Separately' as a default for a user or group?

Hi Chris,

you can use attributes for this. Our VAR set us up so I don't know the details, but you can assign the attribute to either a user or group for that setting. It's great!

Thanks, I actually found the attribute on something Justin Pava posted. Handy to have around for sure :) I successfully set this as a default for my user. Thanks!
