Encryption algorithms used for sending documents via email

What encryption algorithms is used for sending documents (protected with password) via email?

When emailing as a zip, standard zip 2.0 encryption is used (the algorithm is called ZipCrypto deflate). When emailing document pages as a pdf, standard pdf encryption is used (i believe this uses RC4). Neither of these are particularly strong encryption.
