Metadata text field Max Size

I am working on a ticketing system for out IT department and am wondering if there is a "Max" width a text field can be so we can make a comment field for notes when the ticket gets completed.

The admin manual states a max of 4000 characters for text and list fields.

"You can configure the maximum number of characters for Text and List fields: the default value is 40 characters and field widths cannot exceed 4,000 characters."

Can there be performance issues if a field is set to 4000 characters? I'd imagine searching by that field could be hindered, especially if it's an indexed field.
