Workflow to Update Footer in a Word Document

Hello everyone,

I found a few posts that talk about doing this, but I need a bit more direction.

We have a client that wants to do Versioning of a sorts, but they do not like the fact that if Workflow acts on a document it creates a new Version. We are looking at having a Metadata Field that would contain the Client's Version Number in it.

I am looking for a workflow that would allow any word document of a certain template to have the footer updated with this Metadata field. I am not sure where to start the workflow and what activities can write to the footer.

You could use Update Word Document to find the version in the document and replace it with the updated one. That will search through the footer too, but you cannot isolate the search to just the footer. Your pattern for what to find would have to be fairly strong to ensure you're not replacing other words within the document itself.

As for the flow of the whole workflow, you'd download the electronic document from the entry, make the replacement and attach it back to the document.

Depending on how much control you have of the footer, you may have to resort to finding a library that can modify Word documents and scripting in order to isolate your changes to just the footer. You may get better direction on that from an Office forum.

Yes, scripting against Office documents would not be limited to templates.

Assuming we do not go the route of custom scripting, that would require using a Word Doc template via Workflow correct?
