Interestingly enough, the supported OS's of CIFS are outlined here on technet - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc939973.aspx

Interestingly it states some supported OS's as:-

Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft® Windows NT®, Microsoft® Windows® 98, Microsoft® Windows® 95

The fact there is no mention of anything remotely modern, it's probably more of a 'does the windows OS support CIFS' rather than does LF support it. LF will support most things that the OS supports, but CIFS, I'm not so sure. It's VERY old.

Is there a specific requirement for this? I think the bigger question here might be more like why is the customer still using this?
