Prevent attribute from being set

Is there any way to prevent an attribute from ever being set? We have an attribute that is being set by the users and we can't find out where they are accidentally setting it. It is causing all their data to be lost. Can we somehow lock this attribute from ever being set again?

What attribute is  being set? and how does it cause data lost? does it remove fields? delete entries? metadata? pages?

[Options]ElectronicImportOptionCheckIn and can be set to 0.

Description:

Default option when saving a modified edoc. 0 =Discard

So when saving any electronic document, instead of prompting with options, it always discards the changes.

With this attribute you can save your electronic documents all you want but the changes are discarded as soon as you close the application. Some users can go months without realizing they set this.
