Question

Web Access 10 Dynamic "%(Parent)" fields not populating

asked on November 9, 2016

Hi guys,

I see that this has been a bit of an ongoing issue with the Web Access client, and reporting that we're experiencing it with Web Access 10 (10.0.5.275) where template fields that are configured for Dynamic lookups and have a default of "%(Parent)" aren't consistently populating in the Web Access client.  They work fine in the full client and populate correctly every time, but are hit and miss in Web Access.

In Web Access on upload/creation of a new document, if we select the template from the first, "General" tab in the new document window, the fields usually populate correctly with the parent fields when the document is imported/created.  If we select the template from the "Fields" tab in the new document window, the fields don't populate on selection of the template (they are displayed as blank dropdown fields but the table fields are visible if the dropdown is expanded), or after clicking "Import".  If we assign the template to a new document after it has already been uploaded to the repository, the fields don't populate when the template is assigned however sometimes, but not always, the fields populate after the "Save" button is clicked.

The fields are Dynamic, "text" fields and as mentioned, work correctly and consistently in the full client.

Thanks,

Mike

I was able to reproduce the issue. Filed bug #151268 for reference.

During my testing, I found that after setting the existing entry to the template, even though the field inputs appear blank, clicking save still pulled the %(parent) value. However you can still run in to the issue I mentioned above with mouse over. If you set the template and click save without dragging your mouse over the fields, it should work. If you drag your mouse over the fields on the way to the save button, it clears them. Essentially, the %(parent) token is there, just not visible but the mouse over clears it.

Definitely something we will get to fixing, but again, hopefully understanding the issue helps work around it for now.

What you are experiencing could be a result of some pre-loading Web Access does on mouse over. Does this issue specifically occur when you open the import dialog, go to the Fields tab, and drag your mouse over the dynamic fields? On mouse over, the fields show a quick loading spinner and can reset back to blank instead of %(parent). This is something we are looking in to for a future release, but hopefully it will be easier to workaround the current issue knowing what causes it.

If this doesn't describe the problem you are seeing, it might be easier to pick out what's going wrong with a video.

Hi Jared,

Yes, we are experiencing that - "%(Parent)" on mouse over then blank.  However that's not the main problem.  This is what we are seeing in Web Access if we try to assign a template to an existing document in the repository:

Both "Client name" and "Industry" are text field types populated via Dynamic lookup, defaulted to "%(Parent)".  Since posting this morning I've upgraded Web Access to 10.1 and we are getting consistent field population on creation of new documents:

But the issue is ongoing with existing documents in that when we assign the template (via Web Access, it works fine in the full client), some of the time the fields populate with the parent entries, but usually they are blank.  The dropdowns work, it's just the initial population that fails.

Thanks,

Mike

Also I will note that changing the fields to multi-value fields fixed the issue of %(parent) not showing up, but that may or may not be possible for your use case.

Thanks for that Jared.  Cheers!
