Question

Import Agent with different OCR setups based on profiles

asked on November 8, 2016 Show version history

Hello,

I run a single instance of Import Agent 9 where I need different OCR setups - decolumnize text or not, different image enhancement options - depending on the profiles. As I understand, the OCR setup is global to all profiles in IA 9, so I'm stuck. Does IA10 allow OCR setups on a profile basis? If not, what are the options (other than an additional IA license ;-)

Hi Stephane,

The short answer is no, Import Agent 10 does not configure OCR settings per profile, it is still controlled globally. Someone from the product development team might be able to weigh in on whether this is something which could/would be considered for a future enhancement.

In the meantime, what you can do is for profiles which would need different OCR settings, store them to a single folder and set up a Workflow to monitor for new files and schedule OCR for the entries with the desired settings, then route them to their final destinations accordingly. You could set up different "processing" folders for each configuration of OCR needed.

The only catch with this setup would be that you would need Distributed Computing Cluster (DCC) for the Schedule OCR task. If you have many documents which would be often OCRed, this would be a good investment for sharing resources for the processing-intensive OCR action.

Hope this helps!

Thanks James for considering this need in a future version of IA. Thanks also for your detailed & exhaustive answer.

Well you can do a workaround ause Workflow to do the OCR by using the distribution cluster.

In workflow you can use the activity OCR. So with import agent you can create different profile that will save in a different folder by profile, that will triger a different workflow, base by the profile and use a different OCR setting by workflow.

you can also use one worflow process and use condition to use different OCR activities.
