Question

Download/Export Speed

asked on October 19, 2016

Is there any way to download a group of files at an increased speed?

My scenario is: I have a team that needs to download all the documents in a folder as PDFs.  Each folder may contain several documents (average 10-20) and each document averages 10-20 pages. However, some folders can get quite large numbering thousands of pages in some cases. I have timed download as PDF speeds on the average folder sizes at over 6 minutes. I am assuming this has some to do with the fact that LF is having to convert the files during the download as when I exported them out as TIF, the speed was reduced by just about half. However waiting over 3 minutes to download an average size folder and then having to convert the files to PDF outside of LF will not necessarily save my users any time. I don't even want to think about how long it might take for them to download one of the folders that might contain thousands of pages.

Does anyone have any suggestions!!????

It depends on how your users are connecting to the Laserfiche Server, but if the limit you're hitting is due to bandwidth, there's no real good solution other than buying more bandwidth, putting a faster VPN server in place, and/or otherwise improving the infrastructure that download happens over.

The best idea I can come up with is try to come up with a way for your users to NOT have to download the PDFs all at once. Why do they need to download them out of the repository at all? You might be able to implement something where Workflow can be used to dump the files onto a shared network folder, but then you'd be putting the work onto the server, and you might still have slowness issues.

Thanks Glen! Yes, I have ran circles around this problem including trying to think of a workflow solution. But, I have also reached a similar conclusion...the only way I come up with is to keep them from downloading the files out as PDFs! I just wanted to reach out to the LF community first to make sure that I wasn't missing a setting configuration or something.

I really think they can complete their entire process in LaserFiche...but they will need some convincing to believe me. They are downloading the files and combining them into a single PDF using Adobe. They then save the combined "binder" to a network drive and they also use Adobe to make markups as part of an evaluation they perform on the documents. From what they have told me about their process everything should be able to be completed using LF annotations anyway so now I will just have to prove it to them!

Thanks for the response!!

I've had this exact conversation with users myself, and the best way to get 'buy in' that I've found is to show how powerful and flexible the search function in the Laserfiche Client is, and if you have Web Access and Laserfiche Mobile, how much easier it is to access repository documents remotely as compared to doing it with VPN.

Buy in can sometimes be obtained by showing how much more secure and easy to control the documents in the repository are as compared to when they are on Windows shares, but typically only with HR staff who have serious concerns about leaks of confidential information.

Thanks for the tips Glen! I will use them in my discussions with them!
