Question

Convert Word to TIFF or PDF with Workflow

asked on September 25, 2016

Yep, that ole chestnut!

I've been looking around for solutions that don't require a Word installation. There are a number of tools, such as:

None of these products require Word to be installed (and don't rely on office automation) however, the cost of licenses can range up 10,000USD.

Is anyone able to recommend a cheaper solution which can convert Word to TIFF or PDF?

Hi Ben,

The "Update Word Document" tool in Workflow 10 allows for conversion to PDF. Click the gear icon next to the activity name and you should see the below options:

Hope this helps!

Hi Anita,

I suspect this will be the solution I go with, however, I can't seem to get it to work.

The Word activity works fine with a Server Object but not with an Activity. The only activity I can get to recognise is the Search activity and the Word activity is saving the XML of the search results, not the resulting entry. I've tried selecting "Return First Entry Only"

Hi Ben,

You'll first need to use the Download Electronic Document activity, otherwise as you've experienced it'll give you the XML.

This is a great task, especially for e-mail attachments.  However, we are finding thta it throws a lot of errors in this form:

6/28/2018 11:35:02 AM    Update Word Document Not Notarized    Loading [MinorFormattingLossCategory]: Import of element 'rsids' is not supported in Docx format by Aspose.Words.

The pdf actually looks fine - is there an update that would resolve this?  We are using WF 10.2 by the way.

According to a post on the Aspose forum, upgrading the Aspose library to 15.x should resolve the issue.

Sounds like you'll need to wait from a version upgrade from Laserfiche to resolve the issue.

There's a discussion about this on the Aspose forum. Does it help?

@Ben Birns, I'm using this WF activity to create a PDF to attach to an email, but now I'd like to save to the repository.  How did you save the converted PDFs back to the repository?

My WF is attached and I used the Download Electronic Document activity followed by the Create Entry, Assign Fields, and Attach Electronic document to save to the repository.  This results in a second Word document saved in the repository, not a PDF.  Thoughts?

Hey Michelle, in your "Attach Electronic Document PDF" activity, are you using the output from your second Update Word Activity? What do the properties on that activity look like?

Anita, that was it.  The activity I referenced above was what I changed it to just now.  The Entry was correct, but the activity was wrong.  I made that change and I've got the PDF saved to the repository now.  Thank you!
