Speed of Volume Export

posted on September 13, 2016

There are a few threads on this topic, but I have not seen a good definitive answer on why it takes so long to export volumes, and what reasonably can be done to speed this process up.  Example:  We have a 40GB volume with 175,000 documents.  The export process has run for 24 hours, and it has not even compiled all of the metadata.  Our progress bar is still sitting at zero.  By today's standards, this is not a lot of data.

Why does this happen, and what can we do to speed this up?  Thanks -

Bill

I exported a 150 GB volume with 161,000 documents to the same physical location in 6 hours. When I tried to do a big move of 350 GB / 460,000 documents, it hit 12% after 48 hours!

What could be the difference in these situations? The bigger one was done in production with more powerful computing resources.

Answering our own question, it took about 16 hours to export one 18GB volume.  We did have a DB server under a heavy load some of this time, but this is not atypical, in our experience.

We moved to creating large briefcases because of this and is what I recommend. Easier to manage 1 file anyway and can be done from the client. I have exported/imported 100gig briefcases without issues.

Can you tell how long it took to export/import one 100 gig briefcase?
