Zone OCR Orientation malfunctioning - zone clipping causes inaccurate or missing text - possible bug?

asked on September 8, 2016 Show version history

I have some cover sheets with an ID written vertically in the lower left corner of the document (see attached a sample file). When I create a Zone OCR activity and set the Orientation to either 90 or 270 (not sure if the rotation is CW or CCW based on the documentation) In either case, it does not read the information in the zone. See attachment 2 for an example. I also tried to target a smaller region that is slightly offset from the original, and in this case I get an error "The zone is outside the bounds of the image" (attachment 3). Seems like this may be a bug. I have tried this in both QF 9 and QF 10 and get similar results. Also, I have adjusted the Advanced Settings to prefer Numbers, so that doesn't help.

The only workaround I have for the moment is to rotate my sample image, place the OCR region around the area where the rotated code appears, unrotate the sample image, and place a 90deg rotate local enhancement on the Zone OCR activity.

Anyone else run into issue with this?

Thanks for sharing this bug and your workaround! We are currently working on fixing it (it's filed as SCR 148498, for future reference).

It seems to occur when a page's length is greater than its width, and a zone with orientation 90 or 270 is far enough down the page (specifically, outside the "square" of the page; see the bold black square subsection in the attached image).

Your Local Enhancement -> Rotate workaround is the best we've seen so far.

This likely won't solve your problem, but I know I had a lot more success with the ZoneOCR when I changed the location from a Pixel based location to a percent based location.

You may also want to try changing the Optimization Style to Accurate, see if that provides a better result.

Yea, I was adjusting lots of settings to try and get it to work. Tried both of those and many more combinations. It seems to be strictly an orientation problem, as far as I can tell. At least I have the page rotation workaround as described above.

Thanks for the update. I'll let the customer know there's an SCR!
