Modifying PDF Prompts Import (New Document) Instead of Overwriting Existing Document

asked on August 19, 2016

We have a workflow that makes a copy of a master PDF fillable form and routes those copies to various users to complete/approve in Adobe Reader. Two of our users that receive copies are unable to overwrite the existing document--- they get an import prompt window and are only able to save the modified PDF as a new document VS what they should be able to do (and what others are able to do) which is to overwrite the superseded document in Laserfiche.

Has anyone else experienced something similar or know what is causing this? We're stumped.

This is what we want:

This is what we thought may have been causing the issue and tested but to no avail:

Version Control? NO - we checked to see if version control was turned on on both the document in question as well as the folders housing the document.

User Permissions? NO - we checked the groups that the users were a part of and other users in those same permission group that had the same permissions were not affected.

Options Issue? New Documents > Name Conflicts, maybe the Options were such that documents of the same name could not be written over? NO

Options Issue? New Documents > Settings, maybe there was something under the "When importing PDFs" section? NO

Folder Permissions? NO

Windows Temp Folder Path? NO

Workflow Issue? NO

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Amanda,

This should hopefully fix that pesky issue:

1. Close Laserfiche and open Adobe Reader DC

2. From the menu bar choose "Edit > Preferences..."

3. Select "General" under Categories

4. Uncheck "Show online storage when saving files"

5. Click "OK"

Let me know how it goes!

The user needs the "Modify Contents" access right to overwrite the document. Check their effective rights:

We did and both their groups as well as individual trustee accounts seem to allow them to be able to modify the contents of the document.

Another possible reason "overwrite" is misssing is if the document is on a volume that the user can't write to. It could be read only or the user could lack "Modify/Delete files" in the volume security. Check the user's effective rights on the volume (in the desktop admin console or WebAdmin):

Good thinking! Never crossed our minds--- but I don't think that's it either---

Quite a mystery, please open a support case so we can get trace logs that will help narrow down the problem.
