Question

Read barcode in Laserfiche Forms using iPad camera

asked on August 16, 2016

Hi,

I'm wondering if it is possible to use an iPad's camera to read a barcode in Laserfiche Forms? We have pallets that go through our warehouse that have lot #'s and the production groups are wanting to switch to barcodes. We enter the lot #'s into the form and I'm wondering if we can eliminate data entry errors by utilizing the camera on the ipad?

Preston - Not a direct answer to your question but I would look for some type of 'wedge' type barcode scanner that can be attached to the iPad.  The wedge scanner would 'read' the barcode and then populate the text field in the Form.  You could then perhaps do a dynamic lookup on the barcode to populate other Form fields.  I did a quick Google search on 'barcode wedge reader for iPad' and got some valid hits.

Hi Preston,

Glad you brought that up. Our dev team are working on this. Hopefully, for the field we can launch the camera and scan barcode into fields.

In your case, is there any other information coded in the barcode, except for the lot #?

Julia,

I see there is now barcode scanning ability in the laserfiche app search bar. Can that same functionality be added to a form field?

Preston,

Yes. When you are designing a form field, there's an option to allow barcode scan. Once that's checked, the scan button will show up at the end of the field once loaded up in Laserfiche App.

It works for Single Line and Number fields now.

Julia,

What version of forms is required? I don't see this option.

There are some examples where we would have multi-value barcodes but not as often as single values.

Also, Julia, I do not see the option in Forms 9.2

Thanks,

Preston

This is a new feature in FOrms and Mobile 10.2

right now it supports single value barcode scan. We are looking at multi value barcode scan.

Can you give me some example of the multi-value barcode that you are using?

If the multiple values are printed into a single barcode in e.g. PDF417 (in other words, the visual appearance of that barcode wouldn't tell you whether it is single-value or multiple-value):

The barcode recognition will return it as a single string, that is the concatenation of the values, delimited by a punctuation. In this case, please read it into a single-line field first, and then use JavaScript to split the string into values.

The choice of the multiple-value delimiter is made by the creator of that barcode, or the third-party software that creates it. Typically it is the semicolon.

----

If there are multiple barcodes that are printed in close proximity (for example, vertically stacked, with virtually no space ("quiet zone" in barcode) between each other:

This may violate the quiet zone requirement of the respective barcode standard. In this case, a laser barcode scanner may allow an operator to aim-and-shoot at the correct barcode, by correctly orienting the laser's rectangular scanning area with the barcode. This may be difficult to implement with phone cameras.

----

We would like to hear more about the use cases for mobile and barcode. We would appreciate if you can share some pictures of how the barcodes are scanned in actual working environments. Also, it would be great if we can get some sample images of multi-value barcodes so that we can validate our understanding of their formatting (delimiter, etc).

Julia, can you clarify, that in Forms 10.2 you have the ability to launch the camera and scan a barcode? Or you can use a tethered device to scan into a single value field?

Our example for a multi-valued barcode would contain a SKU, Lot #, and maybe some other field related to the product.

Thanks so much for your help!

Sorry about the confusion. With Forms 10.2 and the latest app, you have the ability to launch the phone camera and scan into a single value field.

From what you said above, I believe you don't plan to use tethered device. If I'm wrong, let me know what device you are looking at, and we'll see how to integrate with that.

Hi Julia,

I have a customer that would like to use a barcode scanner attachment with a mobile device to scan barcodes into a form. Has any testing been done with Forms 10.2 in the Mobile App 10.2 using a barcode scanner attachment on a phone or tablet? If so, are there any that you have confirmed will or won't work with an iOS or Android device?

This customer would prefer to use a barcode scanner attachment because the pages they want to scan contain many barcodes close to one another. When we tested using the mobile device's camera to auto-detect the barcodes and populate the form fields, it was difficult to make sure the camera was capturing the correct barcode. With a barcode scanner attachment they would have greater control over when the device reads a barcode.

Hi Kelsey,

We haven't tested that.

Do you know if they use iPhone or Android? We can start testing them

Also, what type of physical scanner are you talking about? If you have link to the product, we can start from there. As Natalie mentioned there are the ones work with phones, or the ones that has built-in Android systems.

Hi Julia, thank you for offering to test! They will be purchasing new smartphones for this department to use with the form, but I believe the preference is for iOS.

Based on preliminary searches on barcode reader attachments that are available for iPhone, the Honeywell Captuvo SL42 is one possibility. The Symcode Bluetooth Mini Portable Handheld CCD Barcode Scanner is another option. Could you test either of these?

Hi Kelsey,

We tried some Bluetooth barcode scanner. It doesn't really work directly. Most of the time, depending on the device, it might need integration coded into the app.

But there are barcode scanners that have Android systems on it. So we can install the app on those scanners. If you are looking at those scanners, let us know. We will pick one that you guys are using to test with.

Best,

Julia

Thank you for doing some testing, Julia. I will let you know if they end up looking at the types of scanners that run an Android OS.
