Question

Why don't linked documents open from LF metadata tab in Word/Excel?

asked on August 11, 2016

I have been comparing Web Access and LF Client for the best choice for accessing/managing our linked and versioned docs to make it easier for our team members moving ahead.

In both the client and Web Access, I opened a Word document that is linked to another Word document.  I went to the Laserfiche tab and clicked on the document name.  Nothing happens.  No error and no opened document.

But if I go to the metadata tab in either the Client or Web Access I can open the linked document.  In Web Access it requires me to go through the extra steps  to View the Electronic File, but in the client it opens the document right up.

Why don't the linked documents open from the LF metadata tab in Word/Excel?

Sorry about that, I read it the wrong way. The Links tab in the Metadata dialog in the Office plug-in is read-only. I'll add it to our to-do list to see if we can make that clearer.

In the Laserfiche Client, did you click or double-click a linked document on the metadata dialog? Click will select it, double-click will open it.

In the LF Client I can open the metadata dialog and double click to open a linked document. No problem there.

It's when I go into the Client, open the originating document in Word, then go into the Laserfiche tab in Word, highlight the linked document and click on it, nothing happens.

No worries, I figured it could be read both ways!  So when you refer to the Links tab in the Metadata dialog in the Office plug-in as read-only, are you saying it is only designed to 'show' what documents are linked, NOT to open them?

Yes.

OK, that will impact how we use Laserfiche to replace the current functionality users have in SharePoint.  Thanks for the answer.

Any thoughts on making the Links tab in the Metadata dialog in the Office plug-in able to open the document?  Future enhancement?

We'll look into it.
