What's the fastest way to remove color from a document in Laserfiche?

asked on August 10, 2016

I do quality checks on documents our staff bring into LF.  I wish there was a quick way to remove color when someone has neglected to change the scanner settings to Black & White.  Like an icon, or a choice in the list of items that show up when you right-click while your curser is on the document in the folder pane.  I know I can use Quick Fields, but that is not fast!  We don't use PhotoDocs for anything yet, is there a setting in there for this?  If PhotoDocs can be used, could you show the settings you would use?  I have no experience with PhotoDocs.  Thanks!

If the document is a tiff then you can indeed use photodocs. With the item opened in the document viewer go to tasks > Reprocess with photodocs. In the photodocs window that opens up click on the image that you want to convert(If you want to select them all click the first one and then hit ctrl+A). On the bar at the top(See attached screenshot) you should now see options for changing color setting. The first one is black and white, second is grayscale. Click it and it will reprocess all of the selected images. After that click the Store All button(Last icon on the top bar, looks like the Laserfiche L logo, see attached screenshot) and it will put it back into your repository with the changes.

Awesome, thanks, Patrick.  This really works, and it's as fast as I was hoping for!  I saved my profile for this type of action, so I don't have to think about it much next time.  I can just pick this profile, or the additional one I did that includes auto rotate.  I also like that you can do it without actually opening the document; just right click on it and pick the Photodocs option!

I did notice that some of the quality was lost, especially on a page-two that was a colored chart, so I'll need to keep an eye on quality for each page I do this on.

I also noticed that one conversion seemed to cause a distortion that was like a wave action on the paragraphs of words.  In that case, I exited without saving, copied the document so I could have a test document and keep the original safe.  Unfortunately, my test did not recreate the problem.  Not sure why that one went wavey.

Thanks, again!

Connie, it went wavey because of the Rotate and Crop settings that are chosen, as shown in the screenshot above.  Uncheck those, and ONLY choose the CONVERT COLOR section and choose the first option Black and White.  That's the only setting you need.  It works flawlessly that way.
