Template- Permission on fields while changing template

asked on August 7, 2016 Show version history

Hi All,

Scenario: User wants to change the template associated with a document to another template.

Assigned features rights all allowed at user level and at folder level also all permission given.

Only in the template field security, access to certain fields are not granted and hence while changing template it is showing access denied.

Is it necessary that the user should have edit permission on all the fields in the current template before changing it?

Also is there a way to set a field independent? i.e. common to all templates and security rights can be set separately (at the field level).

Version: 8.2

Thank you.

Yes, a user must have edit rights on all fields on a template in order to remove that template from an entry.  The thinking is that changing the template will clear the values from all of the fields in the currently-assigned template, and so not enforcing this would allow users to change field values in cases where they should not be able to.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking in your second question.  A field can be part of multiple templates, but it will have the same security in all of them.  Recent versions have allowed fields to be marked "required" on a per-template basis, but otherwise a field is the same in all templates it is a part of.
