Question

How to fix folder numbering issue within the Repository?

asked on July 26, 2016

When creating new folders in the repository and labelling as attached, it causes a bit of a headache as you can see.

Can the repository not recognise a numbering system as simple as this? or am I missing something here?

Actually, Laserfiche sorts everything alphabetically not numerically. The only way to get it to sort properly is to pad numbers with leading zeros. Your folders would need to be "Section 01" and "Section 02" etc. Of course, if you ended up getting to 100+ sections, then you'd need to pad to 3 digits.

Sorry! Your explanation of the fundamental issue was great. I was just trying to clarify because it sounded like you were saying that moving the number to the beginning of the entry/folder name would resolve the issue. It will not. Even if an entry begins with a number, Laserfiche will still sort it alphabetically. You have to pad with zeros to correct the issue.

I believe When your name starts with a alphabet, order of sorting is First character->space->First Number->First Number.

That's why section 1 is higher than section10 because LF is considering section 10 as not "Ten" but  as "1 and 0". and then section 11 as "one and one". So when there is a clash between section 10 and 11 second character 0 is smaller than 1 hence section 11 comes after section 10. but both section 10 and 11 come before section 2 because 1 is smaller than 2.

For this to work you have to move numbering to the beginning of the name. Then LF will sort based on numbering and would consider 10 as "ten" and not "one and 0".

I hope it makes sense.
