Microsoft Office Files on VPN have Error 780: No response received from the server

asked on July 8, 2016 Show version history

I have a couple of users who have attempted to use Laserfiche through a VPN. This has been an ongoing problem for some time, before and after upgrading to LF10 as far as I'm aware. This issue does not occur when connected to the domain without a VPN.

When attempting to open any kind of Microsoft Office file (.doc, .docx, .xlsx, etc.) while connected to the VPN, I receive error 780: No response received from the server. This is after about 1 minute of attempting to load. I expect to receive a timeout error or something instead, but the files I've been testing with are not big (2MB max). I can open any Laserfiche pages files or PDFs without a problem. I even have two of the same document--one as Laserfiche pages and another as .docx--and I can only open the LF pages example.

Does anyone know what the cause might be?

Did you find a solution to this issue?  I just switched to Meraki Firewalls from WatchGuard and am now experiencing this problem.

If you haven't configured your firewall to allow traffic on port 80 or 443 you'll need to do that.  Some firewalls will also block large response messages or files of certain types.

Everything works with the exception of opening Word and Excel files. Is there something specific to look for?  I don't think it is a Laserfiche issue, just need some help finding where to look. So far nothing showing in Event Viewer or the logs for either firewall.

Error Code: 780

Error Message: No response received from the server. [780]

This sounds like Meraki's AMP, and that page talks about where to find event information.

I was just about to type out a message how I already checked the AMP logs thinking the same thing, but I instead disabled the feature.  And it works just fine.  You are absolutely correct.  I added a whitelist for the Laserfiche servers in AMP and that seems to have taken care of it.

The weird part is that the logs for AMP haven't shown any activity at all until after I added the whitelist item even though it's been up for over 24 hours.

Thank you so much for your time.
