Forms Feature Request: option to auto add classes based on variables

asked on July 6, 2016 Show version history

When creating public complex forms, you do not have the luxury of making a multi tiered form because there are no users to step through a complex form. So we end up making a very large, complex form with most fields hidden so that they become available based on the steps you choose.

What makes this more difficult is the way the CSS and Javascript page is setup. Since most fields are hidden, you need to create a class for each field so that while it's hidden you know what the name is when looking at the CSS and Javascript screen. This is a very tedious process.

What I'd like to propose is a setting that would allow you to turn on an "Auto Create" css class that would take the variable associated with each field and add it as a class, perhaps as something like "var_variablename". Since by default the label for a new control is what the variable is auto named this would make hidden fields be more easily recognizable when looking at the CSS and Javascript screen. It would also create a built in system to make selectors more easily read, especially if the designer takes a moment and creates a more usable variable name (which I do, and many others do - unfortunately to set a css name you have to click to another tab and type in something again - this is a minor issue, but when designing large forms can be very tedious.)

Hi Chris, I added it as an enhancement for Forms.
